I can no longer obey; I have tasted command, and I cannot give it up.

Napoleon Bonaparte was an infamous Corsican, turned revolutionary general, turned leader of Republican France. In his youth, he was a Corsican nationalist, and supported both the republican revolution and the Jacobin movement, and caught the attention of Maximilian Robespierre’s younger brother. His rise to prominence began in the early years of the French Revolution, when we was appointed as an artillery officer during the Siege of Toulon where his command would prove to be invaluable and lead to the city’s capture by the revolutionary forces. Over the coming years Napoleon Bonaparte would continue to lead the French army to numerous victories over the monarchist coalitions of Europe, often winning against numerically superior enemies. His victories and exploits in both Italy and Egypt would garner him great fame and influence in French politics. In the closing months of 1799 Napoleon would go onto to become one of the leaders of France in a period known as the Consulate. During this time France would retake the Louisiana territory from Spain, which Napoleon would later sell to the United States following the Haitian revolution. On December 2, 1804 Napoleon would be crowned Emperor of France at Notre Dame Cathedral. Over the next 10 years Napoleon would wage multiple campaigns of conquest across the European Continent, annexing new territories into France, creating new client states, and reshaping not only the borders of Europe, but also the political attitudes of those living within his Empire and its client states. This would eventually culminate in Napoleon’s failed invasion of Russia in 1812. This failed invasion would eventually lead to Napoleon being deposed in the war of Sixth Coalition, and be sent to exile on the island of Elba. This would not last however, and in February 1815 Napoleon would escape his exile and return to France once again as its emperor. During a period known as the Hundred Days Napoleon would attempt to restore his rule, however a coalition of states would meet Napoleon’s forces at the Battle of Waterloo, and Napoleon would once again be deposed and the Bourbon Kings returned to the throne of France for a second time. Napoleon would once again be exiled, this time to the Island of Saint Helena in the middle of the Atlantic. Napoleon Bonaparte would die on the island in May of 1821, however the legacy of his rule and conquests still affect the European continent to this day.
